שיח אברהם קשור בעבותות לפולקלור הכנעני והתנ״כי. ישנם תיאורים המספרים כי זהו השיח בו אברהם מצא את האייל בסיפור עקדת יצחק, ובכך תרם השיח להצלת בנו.
הצמח גדל בשפע בישראל ופירותיו נמצאים בשימוש נרחב ברפואת צמחים בעיקר בקרב נשים, לשם הקלה על הפרעות מחזור שונות.
בספרות מתואר שימוש בקרב נזירים גברים בעיקר לשם הפחתת הליבידו. משום כך הוא קיבל את שמו העממי ״פלפל הנזירים״ אשר נהגו לתבל עמו את מזונם לשם הקלה על ההתנזרות המינית.
ד״ר רודולף וייס, אשר היה רופא צבאי, בוטנאי וחוקר צמחים, ואף שימש חבר בכתיבת הפרמקופיאה הגרמנית לצמחים, מציין בספרו(1) כי לצמח ישנה השפעה המעלה ייצורו של הורמון משרה ביוץ LH ומפחיתה את ייצורו של ההורמון המשרה התפתחות זקיקים בשחלה FSH. כפי שהוא מרחיב ומציין, השפעה זו משפיעה על המחזור ההורמונלי הכללי של יתר הורמוני המין, בינהם אסטרוגן. הוא מציין את ההשלכות המווסתות של הדברים על תסמונת קדם וסתית, אקנה, צבירת נוזלים טרום וסתית, היעדר וסת משנית, ואפשרות לעידוד ייצור חלב אם לאחר לידה
שיח אברהם נמצא כתומך בטיפול באקנה(2) ובהגדלה שפירה של הערמונית (3-5)
להבדיל מהשפעתו על גברים, הצמח מעודד את היצר והתפקוד המיני של נשים(6), תומך באיזון המחזור ההורמונאל(7-8), ותומך במצבי מחזורים ארוכים(9), מחזורים קצרים או לא סדירים(10), דימום וסתי כבד(11), דימום לא תקין או דימום מועט, תסמונת קדם ויסתית (12-19) ותסמיני גיל המעבר(20-21).
לשיח אברהם נמצאה השפעה המשפרת את הפריון (22-23), משפרת תפקוד במצבי אי ספיקת הגופיף הצהוב(24), ומקובל מאוד בשימוש בקרב מי שסובלות משחלות פוליצסטיות (25-27) ציסטות בשחלות ואקנה(2) הנובע מחוסר איזון הורמונאלי.
הצמח תומך בהגברת ייצור חלב אם(28) ובמקביל מקל על תסמיני גודש בחזה ומסטלגיה.
הצמח תומך בנשים הסובלות מדיכאון על רקע הורמונאלי(29) ומקובל בשימוש בתסמונת קדם וסתית המאופיינת בדיכאון -PDD.
בנוסף, שיח אברהם נמצא כבעל יכולת לתמוך בחולות בסוגי סרטן מסוימים (30-31), אלרגיות ואסתמה (32) הפרעות שינה(33) ובעיות שונות הנובעות מהיפרפרולקטינמיה (34-36)
ניתן לומר על הצמח בהשאלה מעולם המושגים הסיני, כי הוא מניע צ׳י, מעצים את צ׳י הרחם והשחלות ואף מזין את היין והתמצית.
אין ליטול את הצמח לצד הורמונים סינטטיים כגון גלולות למניעת הריון, הורמונים המאפיינים טיפולי פוריות וטיפול הורמונלי חלופי בגיל המעבר, כמו גם לא לצד התקן המפריש הורמונים, מדבקות הורמונאלית וכן הלאה.
לפי מקורות מסוימים יש להימנע מליטול את הצמח במצבי סרטן תלוי הורמונים.
יש להימנע מנטילת הצמח לצד שימוש בתרופות אנטי פסיכוטיות או תרופות לטיפול בפרקינסון.
יש להימנע משימוש בעת הריון.
